Know its parts: What is it “supposed” to be lined in? Should it have feet? What does the base look like? Should it have a d-ring inside? Where? Does it have a date code? Should it? Where?You can check the Vuitton website or your local boutique for this information… you can also purchase more detailed guides here on eBay that include such details… For example: If it is supposed to be lined in brown cotton canvas, it needs to be lined in brown cotton canvas. There have never been brown suede linings- even in the vintage pieces. Alcantara kind of looks like a suede-y material, but it isn’t suede and although is found in a greyish mushroomy color, it isn’t found in dark brown. A Speedy of any age should have brown cotton canvas lining, so if you see any other lining- you know it isn’t authentic.
Know its Monogram placement: Louis Vuitton has been in production since 1854! Their style is classic, and quality- phenomenal! The traditional Monogram Toile canvas that is so popular today- had its beginnings in 1896. The monogram itself can give clues as to authenticity. Louis Vuitton is very careful about the way that the monogram is placed on any piece. Most of its styles are the same today as they were when they first came out- with a few exceptions. The actual LV monogram is usually (with the exception of some vintage pieces) symetrical from side to side in all monogram styles (traditional, Multicolore, Cerises, Mini mono, Vernis etc.) as you can see in this Louis Vuitton Speedy (notice where the LVs are in relation to the handles, sides, quatrefoils etc)…
Watch the stitching: Louis Vuitton is very careful with it’s stitching. Stitching should be very even and regular. The same number of stitches will be found in similar locations on similar bags… for example the leather tab that the handle attaches onto on any size monogram Speedy bag will always have 5 regular, even stitches across the top.
Watch the age: While vintage pieces follow most of the rules that I discuss in this guide, there are definite differences in vintage pieces. For example, all French Company pieces vary slightly… so if you are looking at a French Company Vintage Vuitton piece, it may differ a bit. For instance, the FC Speedy 30 does NOT always have 5 stitches across the top, does NOT have upside down LVs on one side, and does NOT have Louis Vuitton embossed in the hardware. I’m currently writing a guide to help with these vintage gems- so watch out for it.

Made in Spain? Yes, while it is true that authentic Louis Vuitton is made in France, for over 25 years, Louis Vuitton has also produced bags in the USA, Spain, Germany and Italy. What about the “Upside Down LVs”? People email me all the time about this one… Some styles of authentic Louis Vuitton WILL have “upside down” LVs on the backside. The reason for this is that Louis Vuitton uses one continuous piece of leather that wraps around from the front to back, without a seam on the bottom- and so, the backside has upside down logos. This is true on the Speedy styles (except French Company Speedys), the Keepalls, Papillons, and some similar styles. Most monogram pieces (any piece with a separate piece of canvas or leather on the bottom) will have the LVs rightside up on both sides. Here is the backside of an authentic Speedy 25.
What about the patches? It is true that many older fake bags had patches on the interior and exterior that simply were never there on authentic versions. Fake exterior patch followed by fake interior patch.

Here is the ultimate self-authentication guide to help you 1) determine your seller’s integrity, and 2) determine the authenticity of the chloe Paddington bag you want to buy from an Ebay seller – or already did buy. The obvious way to ensure that you have purchased an authentic Paddy is to buy it directly from your local boutique. Just please know that while there are those shady sellers on Ebay, there are also many excellent sellers as well. I have been selling – and buying – on Ebay for seven years now, and I have learned a lot about how to recognize an honest seller, and how to tell the authentic Paddington from a fake.

The first step toward purchasing your authentic item – whether it’s by Chloe, Fendi, Louis Vuitton, Balenciaga, or any other designer you might be craving – is to be able to recognize an honest seller.

Getting to know your seller:

• Little or No Feedback – Just because a seller has little or no feedback doesn’t mean they are scam artists. All sellers, good or bad, have to start somewhere. Don’t let this scare you out of purchasing what may be an authentic bag.


• Negative Feedback – Obviously, when a past customer left a negative feedback remark, ”FAKE BAG”, you should not purchase from this seller – no matter how authentic the bag seems.


• Positive Feedback – This is a very good indication that the seller is honest, however go through and read old feedback to see what they have sold in the past. You want to make sure they aren’t constantly selling the same items over and over, as that would be a sign they migh be selling good fakes to unsuspecting customers.


• Private Listings – This definitely a flag that the seller could be shady, however I know of many honest top sellers on Ebay who for some reason, prefer their auctions to be private. No worries, as you can still check and see what the seller has sold – EVEN IF THEY HAVE PRIVATE LISTINGS. Simply click on “Advanced Search” next to the Ebay item “Search” bar, and on the next screen that pops up, look to the left side and click on “Items by Seller”. Another screen will pop up, and in the middle there will be a place where you will enter the sellers Ebay ID. The next and final screen that will come up will be a list of all item that were listed/sold by that seller within the last 15 days. HINT: Shady sellers will usually list the smae items over and over – and for mere pennies on the dollar.


• Authenticity/ Return Policy – Anyone can guarantee an item to be authentic, however it is best not to make an online purchase from any seller who will not allow returns. However, if there is a case where you must have the bag, then make sure your payment goes through Paypal. Then, if you find yourself having to file a claim, you will be insured and ensured that you will get your money back.


• Item location – Beware of sellers who appear legitimate, but are selling an item that will ship from a seperate location. More than likely, that is someone after a quick buck – yours!


• Power Seller Status – Just because the seller is a power Seller, you still need to check all of the above mentioned items, to ensure the seller has consistently maintained the integrity you expect as a buyer.

Now…  the authentic Chloe Paddington:

Before I get into “Real vs. Replica”, let me mention that no matter what any seller says – THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A FACTORY SECOND CHLOE HANDBAG!! The replica Paddington bags can look very much like the authentic bag from a distance, so be sure and ask for photos of the following specifics if they aren’t already provided in the auction.

REAL: Chloe uses unbelievable thick and “smooshy” leather to make the Paddington. Both the texture and color will be slightly uneven and natural looking – and it will smell DIVINE!

REPLICA: Though the fakes are looking better these days, most of the time, they will be made from thinner, lighter weight leather that is uniform in texture and color. And because the makers use a cheaper, faster process to dye the leather, they usually have a strong “chemical” smell. And some replicas are so bad, the color looks like painted on plastic – YUCK!!

REAL: The handles of an authentic Paddy are made a certain way – with the “padded insert” of the handle being totally hidden. All you should see when looking at the underside of the handle where it attaches to the bag, is a slight “hump” which is sewn in between the two leayers of leather which make up the handle.

REPLICA: This is a dead giveaway for the fake – all fake bags have visible padded inserts in the handle. If it isn’t shown, ask the seller for a photo of the underside of the handle where it attaches to the bag. If you can actually see the insert, you know the bag is fake.

 

REAL: Above the interior zippered pocket is a strip of leather. Stamped very delicately into it should be “Chloe”, and then centered under that, “MADE IN ITALY”. You should barely be able to read it.

REPLICA: Replica Paddys will have those words, however they will be very bold and deep in the leather. This is another dead giveaway the bag is fake.

 

REAL: Becasue the hardware on an authentic paddy is solid brass, each piece will be in various stages of oxidization. The round studs will also be darker than the side buckles and lock.

REPLICA: The hardware is usually a lighter, shinier brass color which doesn’t oxidize or darken because it is made from a cheaper metal alloy containing a small amount of brass properties.

 

REAL: One side buckle will have “Chloe” neatly and precisely stamped onto the top of it, while the other buckle will have the same thing stamped on the underside.

REPLICA: Most replicas have this as well, however the lettering is sloppy, and in some cases barely legible.

 

REAL: The Chloe lock is something that no one can seem to replicate perfectly. It is made from shiny brass, and then coated with a darker matte finish. It is very heavy, weighing a whopping 1/2 pound! The number of visible stitches that are sewn onto both edges of the leather logo strip should be no more than 9 or 10. Also, notice the bottom of the lock when it is face up, and the word “Chloe” is visible. The keyhole should be rightside up. One last thing – the screws on the back should be flat head, not phillips head.

REPLICA: In most cases, the locks will only have one or two of the lock characteristics incorrect, and in other cases, they are just all wrong! Just be sure and check off each of the above mentioned characteristics to be sure.

 

REAL: Authentic Paddys will be lined in a fine corduroy fabric, with the little lines running at a slight diagonal. The colors can either be a light ivory color, or a dark brown – for some reason, the colors were constantly inter-changed.

REPLICA: Replicas can have the same colors, but will be made from a cheaper cotton canvas, and won’t have the fine lines that corduroy has.

 

REAL: If there is a rounded and folded “Chloe” tag present, it should be made from Ivory colored paper which also has raised “corduroy” lines running horizontally. The word “Chloe” will also be raised. There are two stickers with the bag’s information, and those can either both be inside the folded tag, with one located on the back of the top part of the tag, and the other located on the top of the bottom part of the tag – and both facing rightside up when the tag is opened fully. Or it can have one sticker located on the front of the bottom part of the tag, and the other sticker on the bag of the bottom part of the tag. Alos, the model number should be specific to that bag, and the color should be named as well.

REPLICA: Most fake bags have this type of tag, but the dead giveaway is that the little stickers will be either upside down, or there will only be one sticker. Also, the space where the color shold be is blank.

 

REAL: All authentic Paddys have a serial number which is heat-stamped onto a little leather tag, and sewn into the seam of the interior zippered pocket. On the older bags, the font will be smaller, and will appear upside down from the seam. The newer bags have a larger font, and are read rightside up from the seam.

REPLICAS: If there is no serial number present, the bag is fake. I’ve read that the numbers can be rightside up from the seam on older bags, and upside down from the seam on newer models, but in my experience, I haven’t seen any like that, so my personal opinion is to steer clear of those.

 

REAL: All authetic Paddys have YKK zippers. NOT Riri, NOT Lampo, and NOT generic.

REPLICA: Any other zipper than a YKK – it’s a fake! 

 

Well, there you have it… Some tips on finding an honest seller, and an authentic Chloe Paddington bag. There are many other factors in determining a fake Paddington, but these are the most obvious. 8. Look on the Louis Vuitton Website for that particular bag

9. If the seller has the same bag in various colors that the bag was never made in it is probulary a fake!

10. Trust your judgement

Here are five (5) major things to look for when buying a designer knock-off and tips for spotting a spoof.

1. STITCHING
Stitching can be a dead giveaway. Inconsistent stitching and sloppy construction in less visible areas, such as the underside of the bag or inside pockets, are details to look for immediately. Authentic designer bags tack on an extra zero on that price tag due to extra, carefully-crafted construction. They cost more because they are built more complexly. Counterfeit products usually do not have the care of construction that the real item has. If the construction looks simplistic, it’s likely to be a phony.

2. MATERIALS
Many fakes are no longer made of PVC but of reasonably good leather, even lambskin; however, they are seldom as good as the materials labels like Gucci, Louis Vuitton, and Coach would use. Fake purses tend to be stiff and often have some sort of discoloration. When dealing with replica leather handbags, make sure the leather does not have an uneven look that is consistent. Also, people generally assume designer bags should be lined, which is why many replicas are lined. But, on the contrary, real purses are not.

3. THE LABEL
Look for any kind of misspelling – at all -  on labels and tags. In any quality product, the label is stitched in, but in Gucci counterfeits (for example), a cheap hand tag will hang from the handle. Look at authentic purses online, and study the real tags. That way, it will be easier to spot the fake labels. Fake labels are generally cheaply made, unclear in impression, and has a lesser quality of stitching (and the attachment of the label). Two examples: for one, sometimes cheaply replicated Coach bags will include tags with misspelled and run-on words; secondly, Burberry bags will often be stamped “Burberrys” instead of “Burberry – London” in gold or silver on one side.

4. PACKAGING
Typically online bags or used bags do not have the original packaging, so this isn’t much help.  However, if an online seller is advertising new packaging, be sure to check it out.  Luxury retailers put a great deal of care into packaging their products. This includes the works: tissues, wrapping paper, shopping bags, these extra touches are usually part of a real transaction. Look for items that have their original packaging. It’s important that the box or bag the item comes in is neither too big nor too small, and is of the same brand as the purse you are purchasing. Makers of luxury goods seldom cram things into boxes or flimsy dust bags. Most luxury dust bags are made of thicker, soft cotton and flannel. Smaller items, like wristlets or wallets, will usually come in boxes.

5. DETAILS
Everybody knows that details can make or break a dress; well, the same goes for purses. The intricity of threads, leathers, fabrics, metals and stamping make a luxury bag what it is and should be…expensive. Most luxury items don’t just come with authenticity cards; they also come with a product booklet with details on the details. Key things to look for when it comes to details: make sure the handles are of equal length, the logo is straight and firmly fastened, the details of the bag match up, and that the zippers are in full working order.

This can apply to all handbags, but specifically: Coach, DKNY, Kenneth Cole, Tommy Hilfiger, Ralph Lauren, Fendi, Gucci, Prada, and Armani.

DIFFERENCE BETWEEN AN AUTHENTIC HANDBAG AND A FAKE

Sellers on eBay are REQUIRED to sell only Authentic Designer handbags!!!! It is a shame that there are so many people selling on eBay that will not only sell counterfeit or fake handbags, but that will go to great lengths to trick you into thinking that they are selling 100% Authentic Designer handbags. In this guide, I will help you tell the difference between an Authentic Designer handbag and a fake handbag.

Let me start by telling you a little bit about myself. I am an Authentic Designer handbag addict and I love carrying all styles and brands of Authentic Designer handbags!!!! I have spent several years and a tremendous amount of time on the Internet, admiring and researching Authentic Designer handbags. After all the time and hard work I have spent on researching Authentic Designer handbags, I have come to recognize many signs of a fake handbag that most people would overlook.

First of all, check the location of the seller, which is posted in the auction. In many, BUT NOT ALL cases sellers from Asia are selling fake handbags. The reason behind this is that countries in this area have very unspecific intellectual property laws, so factories, which manufacture fake handbags are a dime a dozen. Sellers from China, Korea and Singapore are especially dangerous so bid with extreme caution!!!!

It is VERY important to check the wrapping of the handbag in the pictures. Paper around the buckles, plastic over the handles, and square tags of material hanging from the handbag are all telltale signs of a fake handbag. Brand new handbags from the boutiques never have any wrapping on them UNLESS THE HANDBAG WAS A SPECIAL-ORDER. Special-order handbags are typically the newest “It” bags, like the Louis Vuitton Speedy 30 was a few years ago but the Louis Vuitton Cabas Mezzo is hardly ever special ordered because it is such a classic. Get a very clear answer from the seller when it comes to the circumstances of purchasing the handbag.

If the seller says the handbag is from the Internet, ask them which website. Websites usually leave the wrapping on the handbags, however there are very few websites that sell Authentic Designer handbags from High-End Designers. eLuxury is the most popular one; also the websites of department stores (Neiman Marcus, Saks, Macy’s, etc) will sell Authentic Designer handbags. When these websites do have wrapping on their items, the handles are covered in tissue paper or plastic and the buckles are covered with blue plastic adhesive. Also the leather square tags that hang from the straps of the handbag are on fakes!!!!! You can also Google any brand of Authentic Designer handbags and put the word “replica”, “AAAAA” or “mirror image” at the end of it and do a search.  More than likely, something will come up. You will pull up brands of items that you would NEVER expect!!!!

Finally, it is SO important to do research on what the handbag should look like. If there is a boutique or department store in your area that carries the handbag that you want to buy, take a trip down there and look at the ones that they carry. ALWAYS be sure to pay close attention to exact colors, the way seams meet, stamps in the leather and markings on hardware. If you are not able to go to a store where Authentic Designer handbags are sold, try going online to eLuxury or the actual manufacturer’s website. Please take a VERY close look at the pictures provided by the seller and keep a watch on the auction.
An Authentic Designer handbag should ALWAYS have a dust cover, authenticity/care cards, and serial numbers. These things are also counterfeited so don’t rely on them totally to verify that the handbag is 100% Authentic!!!!

The BIGGEST red flag to look out for is sellers who sell large numbers OF THE SAME ITEM. This is different from sellers who sell a lot of the same BRAND of items. For example, a seller who is selling 25 Louis Vuitton speedy 30 handbags is VERY SUSPICIOUS, while a seller who is selling 50 Louis Vuitton handbags that are 30 different styles is much more legitimate. Sellers who sell wholesale are ALWAYS selling fake handbags; wholesale meaning that they have large numbers of the same item that they sell at a large discount (over 50% off the retail price).

The MOST important thing to remember when buying a Authentic Designer handbag is to do as much research as you can on the handbag you want to buy. Find a reputable seller, ask TONS of questions and ask for additional pictures. DO NOT BE SHY!!!!!! You should ALWAYS be 100% CONFIDENT and 100% SATISFIED with your purchase or you will never be 100% HAPPY buying that handbag!!!!  NEVER EVER rush into a sale (don’t quickly read over an auction then bid right before it ends) and ALWAYS ask any and all questions you have before bidding. Impulse buying is VERY BAD when buying Authentic Designer handbags!!!! The world of high fashion is full of excitement and glamour, and do not settle for anything less than what you want or deserve!!!!!

You are spending 100’s maybe even 1000’s of dollars buying an Authentic Designer handbag so you should know exactly what you are buying before you buy it!!!!! Be sure to do all your homework before you bid on a handbag on eBay to ensure that you are truly buying an Authentic Designer handbag and not wasting your money on a fake piece of junk!!!

Oh no!  Your “steal” on that great Louis Vuitton purse just turned into torture…you discovered it’s a fake!  What now?!?

Don’t feel bad – thousands of people are deceived by fakes every day.  Most, unfortunately, don’t realize it.  What’s the problem?  Well, for one, the designers aren’t getting paid for their designs.  The real problem, however, is that you’ve just bought a piece of junk, probably made of the cheapest materials around, and not worth anything like what you paid. 

So what do you do when you realize you bought a fake?  Thank goodness, eBay protects you from fakes.  It’s against the law AND against eBay policy to sell knock-offs.  This includes items that are called “like-designer” but have significant features of designer items.  (For example, the LV logo from Louis Vuitton, or Coach CC print) 

The important thing is that you have only 60 days to open a dispute and get your money back.  Keep this in mind when you purchase any designer item! 

Now, follow the next steps to dispute the item and get your money back.  It’s important to use this process, instead of directly asking the seller for a refund, because (a) frequently they refuse and (b) what they are doing is illegal and they need to be kicked off ebay.

Step 1:  Document the listing.  Copy the pictures from the listing if you can – or copy the entire listing with description.  The easiest way is to open the listing full screen, then hit Print Screen on your keyboard.  Now, open Paint (all windows-based systems have it), do Paste, and then save the image as a BMP (bitmap) file.  Do as many times as necessary to capture all the listing information. 

Step 2:  Document the item.  Take good pictures, and write yourself some notes on why it’s a fake.  If you had help from an authenticator, include the email or notes from that person.

Step 3:  Go to ebay’s Dispute Console (in My Ebay, look for Dispute Console), and “Report a problem with an item”.  You’ll need the item number.  Select “Item Significantly Not as Described”.  Ebay should direct you to PayPal when this step is complete, so you can open a dispute with them as well.  (Hopefully you paid with PayPal)

Step 4:  If you used a credit card (through PayPal or direct), contact them and dispute the charge – explain that the item was a fake.  Most credit card companies are very supportive.

Step 5:  Leave Feedback.  Be sure to leave NEGATIVE feedback with explicit comments about the item being a fake.  This helps warn other potential buyers away.

If you bought the fake from somewhere other than eBay, you might be out of luck.  If you used a credit card, be sure to call them immediately and open a dispute through them.  A brick-and-morter store will probably give you a refund, with a receipt, especially if you threaten to call the police about the sale of fake items.  (Yes, it really is that illegal)

THAT IS, EVERY HANDBAG WITHIN A SPECIFIC STYLE NUMBER HAS THE SAME NUMBER (NOT TECHNICALLY CALLED A “SERIAL NUMBER”).

THIS  EMBOSSED NUMBER IS UNIQUE TO THE STYLE, NOT THE BAG, THUS NOT A SERIAL NUMBER & IT IS EMBOSSED (PRESSED INTO THE LEATHER) ON THE BOTTOM OF THE “CREED” WHICH IS SEWN ON THE INSIDE OF THE BAG (SEE PHOTO ABOVE).

THIS EMBOSSED NUMBER HAS THE ACTUAL STYLE NUMBER AS THE ENDING DIGITS AFTER A DASH.

POUCHES, SWING PACKS, AND ALL SMALL LEATHER GOODS LIKE WALLETS DO NOT HAVE ANY NUMBER EMBOSSED ANYWHERE ON THE ITEM.

SOME FAKE COACH BAGS HAVE PHONY NUMBERS PRINTED ON A SEWN IN LEATHER CREED. SO BEWARE!
